The Severodvinsk-based Zvyozdochka federal unitary enterprise and France's Areva TA have signed a contract to upgrade an installation that would be used to burn low- grade solid radioactive wastes resulting from the scrapping of nuclear submarines.

The project to modernize the site is part of bilateral Russian- French cooperation within the framework of the G8 Global Partnership Against the Spread of Weapons and Materials of Mass Destruction, Zvyozdochka told Interfax.

France is to provide more than 3.5 million euro in financing. The installation is to become operational in 2009.
