The decommissioning of the seventh nuclear submarine has started at Zvezdochka shipyard in Severodvinsk on the money allocated by Canada, Nadezhda Shcherbinina, press secretary of the plant, told today ITAR-TASS news agency.

The B-524 Zapadnaya Litsa submarine, removed from the inventory of the Northern Fleet, has been placed in the floating dock for decommissioning, she said. "Canada will subsidize the decommissioning of 12 Russian multi-purpose nuclear submarines (not carrying intercontinental missiles) at the Zvezdochka shipyard as part of the Global Partnership programme adopted at the G-8 summit in 2002," Shcherbinina said. Ottawa will allocate up to 100m Canadian dollars for these purposes.

The B-524 Zapadnaya Litsa Project 671RTM Schuka submarine (known as Victor III according to NATO classification) was built at the Admiralteyskiy shipyard in St Petersburg. In all, as many as 26 such submarines, 102 m. long and having a displacement of up to 6,999t, were laid down [at the yard].
