Sweden is allocating 5m dollars to nuclear safety in Russia this year, Aasa Gustafsson, an official from the Swedish Foreign Ministry's department for disarmament and non-proliferation in the CIS countries [as received, probably the department for disarmament and non-proliferation], said today in her speech at the public dialogue forum "Nuclear Energy, Society, Security".

She also said that "in 2003, when Sweden joined the Global Partnership Programme, we already had a lot of experience from cooperation with Russia in the area of nuclear safety".

Gustafsson underlined that "Sweden is currently taking part in six nuclear safety projects in Russia's north-west. The most important ones are the physical protection of nuclear materials retrieved during decommission and utilization of nuclear submarines, and also the creation of a system for physical protection of such materials at the Nerpa factory's shipyard.

Moreover, Gustafsson said that "a project for controlling and moving nuclear materials on the Kola Peninsula will be completed in 2007". "This project is also carried out within the framework of the Global Partnership," she said.
